Abstract: The importance of a correct diagnosis of atrial fibrillation in the horse is discussed in this article based on bibliographic data as well as on the clinical experience of the authors. The different etiopathogenesis and causes are described, The clinical manifestations, the diagnosis, the therapeutical protocol and the follow up are also detailed. At the end of this article, the cases treated by the authors as well as the difficulties and solutions in order to obtain a good electrocardiographic examination are described. Atrial fibrillation is an arrhythmia that commonly occurs in competition horses and limits the athletic performance. In these horses the arrhythmia may appear during or after an intense physical exercise without underlying organic cardiac disease, For all of this we consider very important to auscultate cautiously the horses and to perform an electrocardiogram if an irregular cardiac rhythm is detected during the veterinarian consultation that takes place in, all modalities of competition (race, jumping, endurance), as well as during the pre-purchase visits. It is known that the electrocardiographic and echocardiographic exams are still not very widely available diagnostic techniques in the practical equine medicine. It is important, though to know the wide distribution of the arrhythmias not only in the equine but also in canine and feline population. These arrhythmias need to be treated as soon as possible in order to increase the probability of a satisfactory therapeutic result. For all the reasons already explained we consider that the electrocardiographic exam should be included as diagnostic tools not only before and after a competition that requires a high athletic performance but also during a pre-buying exam if an arrhythmia is suspected on clinical examination.
